ABOUT
Third World was created to inspire autonomy, redefine narratives, and empower communities globally. A response to witnessing systemic inequalities in countries categorized as ‘Third World’ and areas within the United States, where marginalized communities face similar struggles against structural oppression and lack of opportunities. On a trip back home to Guinea, founder Boubacar Diallo witnessed a disabled, elderly woman, weak and alone; she struggled to move her coal inventory. This scene epitomized the severe dire circumstances faced by many. Boubacar began questioning his role in reforming what he witnessed and became inspired to act. This moment crystallized the need for a brand that speaks to these struggles and provides a pathway to autonomy, self-sufficiency, and empowerment.
The phrase ‘Third World’ is understood today to characterize underdeveloped and poverty-stricken countries. It is often used pejoratively in our society. However, the term was initially used to describe a bloc of developing nations seeking independence from the dominant superpowers of the Cold War, nations that deviated from the Western capitalist bloc and the Eastern communist counterpart. It was not intended to identify these nations as less than, but instead as a developing, powerful, and brewing ‘Third Force.’ Our brand aims to reclaim the original spirit of this translation as a symbol of strength and autonomy, providing the agency to shape our destinies. It strives to encapsulate the resilience in every corner of the world where people strive for better despite systemic barriers.
Our clothes are a vessel for our mission. The crisp textures, thoughtful colors, and expressive designs assemble in each piece to tell a unique story. A story that may recognize struggles, empower aspirations, foster communities, and everything in between—combining symbolism and contemporary fashion to deliver products that embody our values as a brand. Our stylish and dynamic wardrobe options convey the beauty and strength inherent in the resilience and independence present across the globe. Beyond our clothing, Third World is dedicated to creating platforms that uplift, empower, and transform the lives of artists, creatives, and individuals that resonate with our mission.
Boubacar’s experience in Guinea, intertwined with memories of systematic neglect and education of historical traumas, highlighted the resilience of communities that continue to thrive against all odds and inspired him to create Third World. It is more than just a brand; Third World bridges global experiences, offering a platform where stories are told, struggles are recognized, and dreams are realized.
